Storyboarding is an art form unto itself that is not to be underestimated. It really is the first pass at the directing of the film, and can have a real influence on the way a film is shot. Storyboard artists make huge yet silent contributions to cinema and the good ones have an enormous knowledge of the history and craft of filmmaking. Often key visual narrative ideas are added by the board artist and good directors are aware of this and encourage it. Most of the boarding I have done has been for effects sequences due to my background in special makeup effects and a good basic knowledge of visual effects. Source: Miles Teves
