    Who Should Apply

    Computer scientists who have strong visual skills, production shading artists with strong technical skills.

    Summary of Position

    Works with the Modeling, Art, Digital Paint, and Lighting departments to create shaders that provide the surface color, texture and illumination properties of all of the objects in the film, created using programming techniques and digital paint.

    Responsibilities

    - Develops and implements appearance of the texture and color of each object.
    - Develops shaders using a wide range of techniques, including 3D-paint and regular texture painting, reuse and modification of existing shading functions, and the creation of original algorithmic work.
    - Works from references that may be expressed as drawings, paintings, photographic and motion picture references and/or actual reference objects or locations, but may also take the form of vague verbal descriptions accompanied by furious hand-waving.
    - Codes procedural shaders in the RenderMan shading language.

Requirements:

    Applicants should have strength in one or two of the following areas and familiarity with the others.

    Technical Background:

    - UNIX/LINUX operating system experience and education in Computer Science, Mathematics or Engineering is desirable.
    - Ability to program in a scripting language or high-level language is helpful. Strong preference for those who can program in RenderMan Shading Language.
    - At minimum, must be comfortable in a script driven environment.

    Art Background:

    - An art background, from education and/or work experience, which shows a thorough understanding of visual balance, texture, color, light and form. A good sense for material properties is necessary.
    - Ability to make and implement visual decisions based on visual information.
    - Experience in commercial art a plus.

    Computer Background:

    - Extensive 3D computer graphics in shading; additional experience in lighting, rendering, and/or modeling is strongly preferred as well.
    - Experience with commercial graphics packages such as Maya, Houdini, RenderMan which support procedural model and shader development.
    - Understanding of CG illumination models.
    - Familiarity with the software package Slim a plus.

    Range of Technical Skill Required

    (1 is computer literate, 10 is skilled programmer)

    From 7 to 10: this is a relatively technical position.
