The figuratively and literally noir Renaissance comes to DVD toward the end of July (check out Madeline Ashby's review from last year's Toronto International Film Festival), while those who like their animation a little more epic (and understand Japanese) can drool over the 11-disc, limited-edition Japanese Neon Genesis Evangelion box set.

Oh, the joys of summer. Studio Ghibli's direct-to-DVD collaboration with Naohisa Inoue, who had previously worked with the studio on Whisper of the Heart, comes to Japanese DVD and Blu-ray near the beginning of the month. Toward the end, a collection of Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker shorts and the first Warner Home Video release of the Popeye shorts.

It's going to be a while before Goro Miyazaki's Gedo Senki (Tales of Earthsea) comes to North America in all its controversial splendour, as the Sci-Fi Channel has the rights sewn up until 2009, thanks to their 2004 TV adaptation. Some new titles on the high-definition front: Chicken Little came out on Blu-ray this week (sorry we missed that) and Bandai's new release of the Freedom OAV will be on the HD DVD/DVD twin-disc format. Incidentally, Freedom will also be released simultaneously in North America and Japan.
