Textures Review: Amazing Textures

AmazingTextures.com Home Page screenshot

AmazingTexures.com offers about 100 free high-resolution textures and much more ad mid-res. If you register for a small annual fee you can download the high-resolution version of any image available.

Categories

Brick, Vent, Concrete, Door, Metal, Sign, Street, Wall, Wood, Bush, Building, Grass, Ground, Rock, Tile. The most populated is the Building category. There are no organic textures nor human or animal references and very few “marble” instances.

Resolution and file size

Although you need to register to download the high resolution textures there are many mid-resolution images higher than 1000 pixel. That would not make them suitable for HD or film resolution 3D texturing but it would allow to have a fair result for distant objects.
I was able to find only JPEG format textures. The file sizes are in the range: 500 Kb to more than 1 MB.

Cropping and Framing

Browsing quickly and checking the mid-res of some textures I see that they are quite good in terms of editing: straight, low deformation, flat lighting, adequate cropping make Amazing textures suitable for almost immediate application in a 3D package.

Multi-channel mapping

I didn’t find any multi-channel image maps to apply the textures on different shading channels as: diffuse, bump, specular maps. You will need to extract the other versions on your own.

Tiled images

There is a section dedicated to tiled textures where users can find about 50 images but the freely accessible versions have a very low resolution.

Texture Access

There are 88 free high resolution textures accessible for registered users but to download any other of the available images you need to pay an annual subscription fee of 20$.
Or if you upload 10 high resolution images Amazing Textures will give you full access membership.

Navigation

Textures are organized by one level of categories in the main page. The search function is simple but effective: I was able to find results for “wood planks”, “red bricks” but less relevancy for “roof”, “pavement”

Sources

They accept textures donated by users minimum resolution 1600 by 1200 pixels.

Freshness

There is a “New images” section showing latest uploads.
The latest report the date 13.11.2008 dowunloaded about 2000 times.

Community functions

Users can register for free to the site and can rate textures, download sample textures at high resolution, gather up to 10 textures to download simultaneously, upload textures.

Once again, a useful sharing site for the artists. The subscription doesn’t seem too steep as well. A worthy price to pay for anybody who is into RENTEX.
