YOMAN by Qian Qian from Capture the Motion II, short animated films for Torino 2006

A frame from Yoman. By Qian Qian. Short animated film
Panasonic commissioned RES Magazine (New York, Los Angeles, London) and Nowonmedia (Tokyo) to select five filmmakers from five continents to create original 60 seconds short films inspired by “The Glory of Sports” and the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
The first is “Yoman” by Qian Qian from Asia. Animation by Patrick Dunnegan, Qian Qian. Sound by Nathan Cook. Here is the artist’s introduction to his work:
Two tribes of Yoman, a fictional creature made of snow, both spot a flashing rainbow mushroom. Meanwhile the mushroom runs away. Yoman kids join the fighting. After a wrestling of a while, one kid gets the tail of the other. The kid who lost its tail starts crying. Hearing the cry, both tribes stop fighting. The other kid holding the tail feels guilty and wants to cheer the crowd up. He starts playing with the round-shaped tail smoothly. That cheers the crying kid up. The adults are so happy. The start a new game that they never play.

I don’t find the film to be particularly attractive. It’s very colorful and evoke childish memories. The short is 2D computer animated, I wouldn’t say with Flash only because I cannot determine it by just watching the film but, you know, it seems to be done with it.
The film is available online for download in high quality as a 640 x 480-pixel MPEG video on the Panasonic page dedicated to Olympic Games.
