Some quotes from JasperMorello.com help us understanding the feeling of this unique animation work:
“Visually mesmerizing” - “part Jules Verne, part early David Lynch” - “an incredibly atmospheric and original piece of animation.” - “A visually impressive piece that ingeniously combines many animation techniques.”
This is the Jasper Morello’s trilogy and you can experience only the trailer and a wonderful website. The series is presented as:
Set in a world of iron dirigibles and steam powered computers, this gothic horror mystery tells the story of Jasper Morello, a disgraced aerial navigator who flees his Plague-ridden home on a desperate voyage to redeem himself.
According to JasperMorello.com there are three voyages and these are the three movies’ titles:
- The First Voyage - Jasper Morello and the Lost Airship
- The Second Voyage - Jasper Morello and the Secret of Alto Mea
- The Third Voyage - Jasper Morello and the Ebenezer of Gothia
The Gothia Gazette is a, quite intriguing, ancient journal (blog?) dated around year 1200 a.q (?) telling weird stories about Jasper’s wicked world. What a wonderful way to introduce a fantasy world to the public!
Browsing the film credits I can only presume a mix of animation technique have been utilized in the film production as: 3D computer graphics, photographic composition and miniatures. Characters are represented by black silhouettes and the very richly textured backgrounds give the right contrast for the foreground animation. The resulting visual experience is really at a very high and sophisticated level.
The film won a long list of prizes, among which the Best Short Animation Award in the Australian Film Institute (AFI) 2005 Awards
The website hosting this exquisite work is not lesser refined. It sports a very elegant and textured style with little animated details and backgrounds which add even more value to the overall experience. Seasoned graphic designers will love it, also for its perfect typography.
This audiovisual project seems to have it all: the story, the technique, the artistic research, the narration, the visual style and the original presetantion. I can’t wait to watch it.
